From Ancient Tradition to Modern Smile: Oil Pulling Explained
As a holistic nurse, I’m always drawn to simple wellness habits that have stood the test of time. Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic tradition that’s been practiced for centuries as a natural way to support oral health. And while it’s rooted in history, modern research is beginning to explore why this age-old ritual may actually benefit your smile. 😁🦷
So what is it?
Oil pulling simply means swishing a tablespoon of edible oil — most commonly coconut or sesame — in your mouth and then spitting it out. That’s it. The idea is that oil binds to bacteria and debris in the mouth, helping to “lift” them away before you brush.
Why might this be beneficial?
Your mouth is full of bacteria — some helpful, some not. When harmful bacteria build up, they contribute to plaque, gum irritation, and bad breath. Because oil is fat-soluble, it can interact with the outer membranes of certain bacteria, which may help reduce their presence in the mouth.
Recent research supports this potential.
👉 Clinical Oral Investigations found oil pulling demonstrated plaque-reducing and gingivitis-improving effects compared to controls.
👉 International Journal of Dental Hygiene concluded oil pulling may serve as a supportive addition to regular oral hygiene practices.
In simple terms? It may help support:
Reduced plaque buildup
Healthier gums
Fresher breath
Lower levels of certain harmful oral bacteria
A gentle, natural complement to brushing and flossing
What About Essential Oils?
Because oil pulling uses a carrier oil (coconut or sesame), essential oils can be added to the base oil if someone chooses to incorporate them. Certain essential oils have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in lab research.
👉 Scientific Reports explored the antimicrobial and biofilm-disrupting effects of essential oil–enhanced oil rinses. That said, essential oils are highly concentrated. If used, they should always be high-integrity brands, properly diluted, and discussed with your holistic or biological dental professional prior to use.
At the end of the day, oil pulling may be a simple, low-cost practice that supports oral health when used alongside regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental care.
